July 2008 Book Publishing Association Embraces Intech Environmental Workshops

Members of the Australian Publishers Association (APA) have been the first to benefit from the latest Intech Workshop – Environmental Strategies for the Print Buyer.

Workshops for the Association members were conducted at Craft Inprint in Brisbane, Hannanprint Victoria and Hannanprint NSW.

Initially only one session was planned at each venue, however demand exceeded expectations and additional sessions were held in Melbourne and Sydney.

Book publishers worldwide are continually under the microscope regarding their environmental responsibilities and the sourcing of environmentally sustainable paper is one of their major objectives. This topic which focused on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) accreditation was vigorously discussed during each workshop. Stephen Hawkins from Australian Paper provided an overview of how Australian Paper Mill all working towards meeting some of these demands in the supply of these environmentally accredited and sustainable stocks.

The book publishing industry is just not talking about what they should do, but actually doing something about it.

Beverly Waldron from Penguin Books, one of the world’s oldest and largest book publishers provided a range of every day examples of how publishing companies can become more environmentally responsible throughout all aspects of production.

Beverly also provided some examples of how publishes can produce a carbon neutral book if required.

ISO14001 accreditation was also a major topic that was addressed during this workshop and it was fantastic to be able to share with each group some of the environmental initiatives and accreditations that have been achieved and /or are being put into place across all of the printing and integrated services companies of IPMG.

Corporate responsibility and the provision of a general awareness of how the book publishing industry can be more environmentally responsible was the major objective for this workshop; and as a result of the very positive feedback that was received from the participants, the APA identified a need to set up a Environmental Committee to assist members to build the key questions or options they can implement to ensure the products they produce are environmentally sustainable.

Environmental awareness in not just a buzz phrase any more, we all need to take responsibility for our future sustainability.
