January 2009 Hannanprint Achieves Chain of Custody Accreditation - Making all IPMG Printing Businesses ISO 14001 and Chain of Custody Certified

Hannanprint has recently attained Chain of Custody certification for all of its plants under both the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).

"Hannanprint is committed to managing environmental matters as an integral part of its business," commented Tony Dedda, Managing Director of Hannanprint. "The commitment extends to the manufacturing facility, the surrounding environment and the ability of the company to contribute to the greater environment in which its products and operations extend."

"Chain of Custody certification has been a natural progression as a result of this environmental focus.

"From a Hannanprint customer perspective, benefits include the fact that they will be able to make 'on product' claims in reference to the paper being sourced from responsibly managed forests and display either the FSC or PEFC logo, whichever is valid", he said. "This measure may broadly support clients' corporate social responsibility objectives and more specifically assist in demonstrating the sound environmental credentials of Hannanprint clients."

The Forest Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement of the Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) each provide a Chain of Custody certification scheme with the same goal – to promote responsible forest management.

Chain of Custody refers to the path taken by wood fibre from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution. In a printing context, this is essentially about the traceability of paper through the supply chain from fully certified responsibly managed forests through to production at the designated printing plant.

The FSC sets international standards for responsible forest management and accredits independent third party organizations who can certify forest managers and forest product producers to FSC standards. Its trademark provides international recognition to organizations who support the growth of responsible forest management. The main objective of FSC chain of custody certification is to ensure that FSC certified material is tracked through the supply chain between operations and production processes within operations.

Operations that have been independently verified for FSC chain of custody certification are eligible to label their products with the FSC logo.

Hannanprint has also achieved certification under the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) Council for Chain of Custody certification.

The PEFC is committed to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third party forest certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

The Chain of Custody cannot be broken at any stage. To be able to place the certification logo on a magazine that was printed using FSC or PEFC certified paper, all businesses along the chain such as the wood/ pulp supplier, paper mill producing the paper, company supplying the paper and the printer, must be certified.

A certified Chain of Custody up to the final point of sale enables end customers to identify and choose products knowing there is a system in place to verify the sources of the wood used to manufacture the products.

Hannanprint is proud to have achieved both of these very significant environmental accreditations.

This latest achievement means that all of the IPMG Printing businesses possess full environmental accreditation, with every single plant accredited both with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and Chain of Custody certification.
